Meet Julie Callaghan

Meet Julie, one of the dynamic forces behind our Wound Care portfolio
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your role within InterMed?
I am from South Africa and have lived in New Zealand for the past 9 years. My career in medical sales spans many specialties, and I relish the flexibility and variety that comes with being out and about rather than confined to one place. I serve as a Clinical Product Specialist in the Advanced Wound Care portfolio at InterMed, where I’ve worked for the past 3 years.
What does a typical day as a clinical product specialist look like?
No two days are the same in my role. Flexibility is key, as I might be travelling to Auckland City Hospital only to get a call requiring me to head to Whangarei. My daily activities vary widely, including interactions with various clinicians on the wards, theatres, and in the community. My responsibilities encompass selling, supporting, educating, and troubleshooting—each day brings new challenges and opportunities.
What advice can you offer to other clinical product specialists who are just starting?
Stay adaptable and build strong relationships. Draw on the expertise of your colleagues and clinicians and focus on providing value and support; sales will follow naturally.
What’s the best bit of advice you’ve ever been given?
Focus on the day-to-day tasks and the sales will follow.
Tell us about a professional success story that you’re proud of.
I achieved the highest sales for a specific product across Australia and New Zealand.
What are your favourite things about working at InterMed?
No day is the same and I feel that I add value to my customers. I love my product portfolio and enjoy working with my team.
What have been some of the most important lessons you’ve learned throughout your career?
The industry is small; maintaining a good reputation and strong relationships is crucial. Stay current with industry trends and continuously improve your knowledge and skills.
How do you like to spend your time when you aren’t working?
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family, reading, experimenting with new recipes (not all of which are successful!), and singing.
If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?
If I could learn anything, it would be Latin American dancing.
How do you define success?
I achieve my greatest success when I can organise all the thoughts running through my mind. A tidy workspace and structured environment are crucial for my productivity. I thrive on staying busy and find it highly motivating. For me, success is fulfilling my commitments and witnessing the positive outcomes.
What’s one thing on your bucket list?
One of my bucket list items is to travel to Scotland and walk in the Highlands. Another dream is to travel with my husband and daughter to Hawaii, onto Disney World in Florida, and then up to Canada.
