Meet Gemma, our Anaesthesia & Cardiology BDM
With over 15 years at InterMed, Gemma brings a unique blend of experience from nursing, pharmaceutical sales, and medical devices to her current role as Business Development Manager (BDM) in Anaesthesia & Cardiology. A proud Wellingtonian-turned-Aucklander, she thrives on building genuine relationships, supporting team success, and aligning the right solutions to meet customer needs. Her longevity at InterMed reflects her passion for collaboration, culture, and delivering the right solutions for healthcare professionals.
Outside of work, Gemma enjoys keeping active, spending time with family and friends, and relaxing out on the water.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your role within InterMed?
I’m a home-grown Kiwi girl, brought up in a large family of 6 siblings. Originally from Wellington but moved to Auckland, a city I love, with my husband and 2 children 22 years ago.
My working career has evolved from Nursing to Pharmaceutical sales to Medical Device sales. I am very proud to be part of the InterMed Family and my role as BDM within the Anaesthesia/Cardiology and Medical Team allows me to focus on supporting our team’s growth and success, fostering collaborative wins that benefit us all.
How long have you worked at InterMed?
15 ½ years – How time flies
What does a typical day as Business Development Manager – Anaesthesia & Cardiology look like?
Every day is a little different which is great. Prioritising is important and a good coffee makes a great start whilst catching up on emails, quotes and anything I need to confirm or plan for the day. Most days will include a review of sales, customer visits, some strategic planning and internal collaboration with my colleagues, there may be meetings or training and every day I learn something I didn’t know yesterday.
What advice can you offer to other Business Development Managers who are just starting?
This role is fairly new to me so I am still very much learning but what I would say is build strong genuine relationships, understand your market and know your products so you can align solutions with your customers’ real needs. Listen to understand not to respond and that will give you a better direction to follow.
What’s the best bit of advice you’ve ever been given?
You can do anything but not everything.
Tell us about a professional success story that you’re proud of.
I have had my fair share of ‘sales’ awards over the years but I’m most proud when I hear my customers say to me, I am the first person they call if they are looking for something, perhaps that’s just because I’ve been around a long time!
What are your favourite things about working at InterMed?
I know it’s a bit of a ‘cliché’ but it would have to be the people and the culture, plus we have awesome products which is a bonus.
What have been some of the most important lessons you’ve learned throughout your career?
Be yourself, work to your strengths and try to always do what you say you will.
How do you like to spend your time when you aren’t working?
I like to keep fit whether just walking (used to be running) or going to the gym. Spending time with my amazing family and friends is very important to me. I love to travel and spending relaxing time out on the boat.

If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?
Be a ballerina
How do you define success?
Success to me is being happy, content and always having a goal to strive for but most of all having pride in the mother, wife, sister, friend and colleague I am.
What’s one thing on your bucket list?
Take the family on a trip to Japan
